Frosty PicsSome More Pics (Thanks Mike) and Results
Also a GPS Map  (14.35 miles, also shows why I believe in a measuring wheel!)

Another great run at CC. Thanks Gary and Mike (and their helpers). Every 3-4 years we have a clear course (6" of snow and mud is pretty great also) and moderate temps. That's what's great about trail running... you never know what you'll get!

Starting at the visitor center this is an out and back course. The course first leads us toward first the Day Lodge (about mile 3) then to SR73 (mile 7) at which point we turn around and do it all again.

This is a rolling course and 96.49343% single track. Due to the season, weather can be a factor making the Frosty a real challenge.

- The 2007 course was COLD and 4 inches of crusty snow made for sore and floppy ankles!
- 2008 was cold and muddy

Address of Vistor Center: 3980 Clarksville Rd, Waynesville, Warren, Ohio 45068

Trail Scale: 9 out of 10

Best time I know of: 1:35:11

I think this is a great course and very fun winter trail run social. I am dismayed to see that the S/F has been changed to the visitor center from the lodge. The visitor center may have ample parking, but there is no indoor area for the terrific post-race chow/social which I feel is a integral part of the event. I recognize that parking was limited at the lodge and that off-road parking caused some damage, but the park manager was not upset and declined the ORRRC's offer to fix the ruts caused by car tires. So, I strongly suggest that the event return to the lodge. Do others agree?

Hello,
I ran my first trail race last month at grant park, I was wondering if this race at Caesars creek will have running water creek crossings...will our feet get soaked from theses crossings?
Thanks and hope to see you tomorrow!

jeffmc said...

Bill,
No... creek crossings!

Your feet should stay dry. There are a few small streams but they are very jump-able.

That was a fun course! That felt like more than 14 to me...I know I slowed near the end but I didn't think I went THAT slow. The course was well pounded in and well marked. Thanks for the great run and the pictures, see you in a month!

Blue,
For the last few years most folks have stated that the course a few tenths short. (which is ok for a trail run!) However, the RD really want to get that last few tenths in the course... so is slightly longer than in past years. Anyone have a Garmin? Of course I need more that ONE Garmin as proof positive. (I have a Garmin myself, but get differing distances on the same run many times.)

Glad you enjoyed it! It's a classic course.

Hi Jeff!

My Garmin had the course at 13.79 miles. I'm curious to see what ours may have as well.

Cheers,

Ken

First Fall (endo on my shoulder and face), twisted ankle, first time losing the course (better to follow the ribbons than the guy ahead of you). Great course and organization! Can't wait to see what the next one has in store.

Great race all around! Thanks to all the volunteers - well marked, trees cut up, drinks in cups at mile 6/8, etc. It was a hilly course for sure - I now know what a difficulty of 9 means. Looking forward to more...

Sandi,
Posted new results for you. Congrats on a great time!

Any More Garmin Miles out there?

Thanks for all the love! Hopefully, the RDs read these posts.

The next race can be just as challenging at the 14 mile distance. Longer hills but better footing.

GARMIN corrections on MotionBased: I noticed from your GPS map that it logged about 12K gain/loss...have you ever used the correction feature in MotionBased (might be under "preferences" on the "elevation" tab)when you upload your data (you can apply the correction even after you upload the data) to make the proper adjustments to get the ascent/descent data accurate. I'd be interested in knowing just what the actual ascent/descent at CC really was (but I forgot to bring my Garmin with me on Sat!) --Thanks! Lisa

Once again, thanks to all of you folks who organized, volunteered, and otherwise worked on the race. After doing the race from both starting points, I have to vote to go back to last year's start. The post-race atmosphere really adds to the event. Also, I think it is more social to pass people twice on the course versus only once this year. That is my .02 worth. Greg McC.

I applied the "Correction Feature" of Motion Based" to my Garmin reading. It shows the Elevation Gain & Loss as +1,829 / -1,831. Readings of elevation straight from the Garmin are notoriously inaccurate. The correction feature applies real survey information rather than satellite readings. Distance measurements straight from the Garmin vary as well, but are generally reliable for a personal gauge. As Jeff McPherson says, one of the chief characteristics of a good trail race is an odd distance.

Cheers,

Ken

Does anyone know if the trail that this race uses goes under 73 and to the Swim Beach Parking Lot?

Derek, you turn around right before going under the bridge.
