NEW course for 2010... see image. Out and back with 1.2 mile lolly-pop turnaround.
The first two thirds of a mile has 2 sharp hills with a quick descent bringing you to the mile worth of flat meadow running to allow you to make your passes... then back into old growth forest.
The next few miles included: slippery bridge crossings, stream jumps, rooty footing, and off camber fun.
The first large creek crossing begins the the lolly-pop. It could be low, knee-high, frozen or a combo of both, just expect to get wet! The first section of the loop contains technical narrow single track, open meadow and another freezing creek crossing and the aid station. After the station, your heading back along the course that you just finished.
A perfect January trail run!
Parking: Normandy Elementary School in Centerville. (401 Normandy Ridge Rd)
Trail Scale: 7 of 10
Best Time: 47:03

What is the stream like? Width? Depth?
Can't wait for the start of a new year of racing!
Anonymous,
Crossing is mainly bedrock and about 20' across. Most of the year it's about 4-5" of water but crossable without getting wet.
If it's been raining your getting wet or it's iced over... it'll be only 2-3" deep and I would recommend sliding on your rear. :)
I have a backup course that will remove the crossing, however, I will STRIVE to keep it at all cost.
What do we need to do race day to register?
Anonymous,
If you mean register to race: Bring $3 or $9 (non-orrrc member) and get there between 9am-9:45 and have a good time!
If you mean the trail series:
I would prefer you sending me an email. See last post in blog.
Hope this helps!
I vote for keeping the "river" crossings. My trail shoes are a bit dirty and need the washing.
Looks like snow in the forecast - great for running, bad for driving. Since I am coming from over an hour away and need to leave early, I was wondering if there would be any conditions that would cancel the race? If so, when/where would an announcement be made? Don't get me wrong - I'm willing to drive in bad conditions to race, but I don't want to drive 2+ hours round-trip for a canceled race.
snow dawg,
Unless is it's illegal in Montgomery County to be on the road the race will go on!
Be careful!
I ran the race this morning, my first trail race ever, and it was awesome! Great mud, ice, snow and 2 shin deep creek crossings...just what I was looking for. I had no problem with missing any portion of the course, I followed others and my gps said I actually ran 7.28 miles...so I definitely did not take any shortcuts...though it would have made it easier. My thanks to all the volunteers and course setters/organizers, you did a good job for the conditions. Now if I could only run faster!
Thanks for the race and the free shoe wash/stream crossing. Had a great time.

Today was my first trail race and I have to admit at first I was like "what have I gotten myself into?" However, by the end I was having a great time. I think it was very nicely laid out and organized. I would really like to race next month but I'm not sure I could do the whole 14 miles. Is it possible to only do part (7-8 miles) of the course? Thanks for a great race!
I saw someone taking pictures at the big stream crossing. Where will those be posted?!
Great job in tough conditions. Kudos to the volunteers for being out in the rain and cold. My trail shoes were clean for a few seconds...then blocks of ice...then back to their normal muddy wet selves. Looking forward to what the Frosty 14 can throw at us.

My first trail race! Whew! It was a blast! I'd worried prior to the race about what shoes to wear, worried that my usual trail shoes aren't warm enough for winter. Thank God I wore those mesh top wonders that drain water so well! :):):) And it was a great test of how well the soles hold in mud, since they definitely had not seen that before :) A fun time, great group of folks, and I'm looking forward to Feb.

Hi Jeff -
Great run - Great course -
On way out to aid station at the coned intersection a returning fast runner bore right instead of following signs/cones/and tape to the left -
Called him back and he was then on course - I know that a few people got hosed up at that spot - I feel that it's kind of unfair to have vols. man spots like that when they are marked so well -
Especially if we can talk the vols. into running ! Thanks & Later Runner -
Great fun, but those that ran a shortened course should come clean if they were ranked and forfeit their ranking. That way you don't have to penalize the folks that legitimately placed overall or in their age group by giving everyone the same number of points!
Driving to the race was a bit scary on some icy roads, but I am glad I made it. This was the best race ever! Running through an icy river, numb ankles, mud, ice, slush - who could ask for anything better in a January race? Everyone looked like they were having a great time - thanks to all the volunteers for making this such a fun event!
And all the pictures are very appreciated - great way to show others how crazy trail runners can be!
Fellow Dawgs,
Thanks for all the great comments.
This has been my mainstay training run for about 3 years (2700+ miles)
I'm glad I could share it with you all. I plan on returning next year with a better plan!
After looking at the pics, I noticed that there was log jam waiting to cross the creek---didn't think about that!

Thanks to all of the volunteers. That is a much harder job than running the race, especially outside in the cold. Now that I know the course better, I cannot wait to do it again next year. The creeks made it even better!
To one of the anonymous posters... I was listed as first in the results. I was on 7:20 pace through three miles but, like some of the others, I missed a turn. I emailed Jeff Coudron and had him remove my name from the results and points. So some of us did come clean... This was my first time out on this course and I was all alone and had no grant park veterans to follow... I had fun though!

Great race. Glad to find more trail races near me. Thanks to the volunteers. If anyone is coming from Cincinnati (or thereabouts) and is interested in carpooling to future races, let me know. I'm in the series so will try to make them all!

As always ... BRAVO!!!!
I love the series. Always the most challenging (and dirtiest!!!) races of the year.
Keep up the good work, we all appreciate it.
For those that are trying to guage their true finish, I was also one that inadvertently cut the course. I'm currently shown in
22nd Place, Paul Pardi, Bib # 263.
Jeff,
Looked like a great course! Hope to see you all at least once this year!
